Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend floated over the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
