The Iconic Puzzle Game Didn't Win at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent prize-giving event nears, one notices a demand for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of followers with niche passions.

Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. This is the request: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment that year
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide and have been for over a decade.

The famous puzzle experience rivals well-known building titles for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers operate at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait 35 years.
