In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the aftermath of widespread and deadly youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Political Partnership

According to the official pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a central figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's commitment to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
