The Tottenham defender scored twice as Tottenham prolonged their unbeaten run on the road in the top division and handed Everton their first defeat at their new home.

The Toffees were undefeated in their five previous fixtures at their new ground at the dockside location, having left Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the conclusion of last season.

But Tottenham's leader Van de Ven pounced on two occasions from corners in the opening 45 minutes to place their strong form at jeopardy, and they were failed to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by former Toffees attacker Richarlison - nodded in a final goal to seal the victory.

Jake O'Brien thought he had levelled the tally a short while after the defender's first goal, directing a bullet header past Guglielmo Vicario from an Everton corner.

Beto, meanwhile, missed a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a succession of excellent saves to guarantee Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the Premier League.

But the video assistant referee stepped in, instructing the match official to review the goal on the screen and the official ruled that the winger and Iliman Ndiaye were in offside positions and had interfered with the Tottenham goalkeeper.

The win moves Thomas Frank's side up to third in the division, a handful of points off local foes and leaders Arsenal.

Everton remain in 14th position and sit six points clear of the relegation zone.

Spurs breakdown: Van de Ven fulfils role at both ends of pitch

After a drab midweek performance in the European competition against Monaco, where they managed a mere two shots on target, Frank opted for Randal Kolo Muani up front instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The new arrival was unable to influence the game before being replaced for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it emerged he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Centre-back Van de Ven converted into an attacking force to be feared.

Spurs' first goal came from a well-worked corner routine, with the midfielder directing the ball toward the six-yard box for an free Van de Ven to score.

And Ven de Ven - stepping up as captain in Cristian Romero's unavailability - added his second in added time as he outjumped the England keeper to nod in.

Van de Ven was equally impressive in defensive duties, combining well with Kevin Danso as the pair handled excellently with the 34 crosses thrown their way by the opposition.

Toffees breakdown: Toffees missing striker's instinct

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the novelty may have faded slightly and supporters headed to the exits after Sarr's third for Tottenham.

The end in Everton's winning streak at home won't be a massive concern for David Moyes, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's two recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's outing.

And they were failed to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy evening on in Liverpool.

Beto's form was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a golden opportunity from near the goal, even with having room and opportunity to readjust for a more conventional attempt that would have tested Vicario.

The substitute, too, was unable to influence the game after replacing the starter in the second half.

It was not for a shortage of opportunity. The majority of Everton's attacks came through Grealish and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening balls into the Tottenham penalty area.
