The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in prison, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a preventative measure after fresh information emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said data from the centre monitoring Bolsonaro's house arrest suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his flight.

The former president was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plan which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been managing his judicial proceedings.
