EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson Says
The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
