Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau near Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.

Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, occasionally with Nazi symbols, they reported in a statement.

Police state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish liquid.

The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they stated.

Officers then located many other marked vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.

Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.

Law enforcement state initial examinations indicate the liquid was most likely human bodily fluid.

"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are currently not aware of any physical harm in association with the incident," they added.

Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to solve the case" and have asked to the residents for information.

An important representative stated the incident left him stunned and required to be addressed quickly.

"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right terrorist attack five years ago," he posted on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a shooter focusing on people of foreign heritage in 2020.
